Here is a summary of our northern trips since 2011 on our sailboat Andrée Anne Rachel, a Bayfield 36, and here are several types of practical info in case you need them!
First a resume of our trips over three seasons from Montréal to Troon passing by Labrador, Greenland,Iceland, Faroe, Shetlands up to Troon in Scotland, then circling Ireland.
You will note there are some email adresses or names or addresses of useful people for marina, repairs, winterizing…
Then our itineraries for 2012, 2013, 2014 seasons so you can see the best places to anchor or types of docks you can get, distances to go… There are often not many options!
We are now sailing about 12 weeks per year since 2011.
Summer 2011: After winterizing 2010-2011 close to Montréal, we didn’t go back to Gananoque which has been our main port for 18 years on Lake Ontario, Canada. Instead we took St-Lawrence River easterly towards the Gulf, in order to leave our boat in Labrador, Newfoundland, Canada for the winter 2011-2012. There is no marina at all in Labrador… We sailed the south east coast of Labrador up to L’Anse Au Loup where we left our sailboat in September for the winter, out of the water, mast on. It is an extremely harsh and cold place in winter, very windy! We left our sailboat at a very, very good and safe place, in fact the only mechanic for boats in Labrador! This was in L’Anse au Diable, next to L’Anse au Loup where the owner lives. Very small place. Riteway Construction, (709) 927-5892, owned by John Belben, a very talented mechanic and fishing boat builder, and very nice guy. John and his wife Phyllis have been very charming and offered warm hospitality through the process. We came back home in Montréal through car rental from L’Anse au Loup to Blanc Sablon, few flights from Blanc Sablon to Goose Bay, then Goose Bay to Wabush , then Wabush to Montréal. If you’re heading back to Europe or USA, there are planes through St-John, Newfoundland with better connections and less flights! And cheaper! You just have to drive from L’Anse au Loup to Blanc-Sablon and then fly to St-John, Newfoundland.
Winter 2011-2012: Riteway Constructions In L’Anse au Diable, Labrador, next to L’Anse Au Loup : so, Andrée Anne Rachel was out of water, on wood logs, assembled by John Belben and his men. Surprisingly very solid. And mast on.

Summer 2012: we came back to our sailboat by plane Montréal-Wabush-Goose Bay-Blanc Sablon (2 days! Longer and more expensive than to go to Europe!) to put it back in water in Labrador and cross to Greenland and then Iceland.
So, by car, we bought fresh groceries largely available along the only road (50km) from Blanc Sablon to L’Anse au Loup. We put Andrée Anne Rachel back in water and sailed north east along the Labrador coast until Cartwright which we reached within a week. Then we crossed to Greenland for 5 days 4 nights, anchoring near an empty island, Simiutaq after 592 nautical miles at sea. We landed the next day for customs at Narsak’s police office and then we followed the south, south east, east coast of Greenland for about one month. On the East Coast of Greenland, there is no village, nobody, no diesel for 800 km between Ikerasassuaq (where is the Weather Station of Prins Christian Sund) and Tasiilak…
Vend Om Channel, East Coast of Groenland
Andrée Anne Rachel, our Bayfield 36 anchored at Kulusuk, on East Coast of Greenland
End of August, we crossed to Iceland from Kulusuk 13 miles north east of Tasiilak on the east coast of Greenland. It took us 4 days 3 nights to reach Ólafsvik, Iceland, about 414 nautical miles. We have not been able to reach Reykjavik directly because of a very big storm so we had to go northerly, at Ólafsvik for few days early september. Then we reached Brokey Yacht Club in Reykjavik in order to organize winterizing and come back to Montreal by plane mid september. Aki, a member of that club, helped us very much to organize that ( to find Snarfari Yacht Club and a cradle to rent and a crane to rent also) so we could put it out of the water, again mast on. Aki also secured our boat… He checked it all winter for free!
Winter 2012-2013: Snarfari Yacht Club has been a very good place to store the boat and not expensive. People are nice and caring. Very safe.

Snarfari Yacht Club in Reykjavik
Summer 2013: in May we put back our boat to water in Snarfari yacht club, we then moved it to Brokley Yacht Club, downtown Reykjavik, next to the big new opera house, the Harpa, next to the main harbour. Very neat and safe small marina, close to everything, with very helpful people. In fact Brokley Yacht Club is the marina where we arrived in Reykjavik at first in previous fall, but they don’t keep boats there during winter. We have been able to leave the boat for a month in June July before returning in July for the summer.
Brokley Yacht Club close to Harpa And downtown Reykjavik
Then we left Reykjavik northerly and circled Iceland clockwise from the west coast to the south east coast, passing the polar circle… It took us three weeks.
Then we crossed to Feroe Islands, from Seydisfjordur to Torshavn for 296 nautical miles during 3 days and two nights.
View of Torshavn and its marina when we arrive… In the red buildings there are the prime minister’s office!
Torshavn yacht club is the blue building… We were right in downtown Torshavn … Beautiful…
We stayed in Faroe Islands 9 days, keeping the boat in Torshavn for 5 days while renting a car in order to visit several islands by car. Then we visited two other islands sailing, Nolsoy and Suduroy.
We then crossed to the Shetlands. It took us only one night or 212 nautical miles from Vagur, on Suduroy, to Lerwick, Shetland islands.
Thereafter, Fair Island and north of Scotland, Caledonian and Crinan Canals…
We finally ended up in Troon, south west of Glasgow for the winter 2013-2014 in Troon Yacht Havens, excellent facilities where you can keep the boat in or out of the water, mast on.

Very efficient and specialized help by the mechanics and boat repairs West Coast Marine, Neil Anderson especially, and his men, at Troon Yacht Havens.
There is also a chandlery in Troon Yacht Havens. Next to the office.
There wasn’t any chandlery in Greenland, nor in Labrador.
There was one in Reykjavik near Snarfari yacht club but not on the grounds of Snarfari. You had to walk few km… And for sail repairs in Reykjavik we went by car to a camping caravans dealer in the industrial area west of main harbour.
Here are our itineraries for 2012, 2013 and 2014 (first part)

So we completed 6623 nautical miles since our departure from Montréal in June 2011 towards Labrador (1475nm), then towards Greenland and Iceland in 2012 (2362 nautical miles ).
In 2013, 1555 nautical miles around Iceland, towards Faroe Islands and Scotland stopping by Shetlands!
Finally, 1231 nautical miles from Troon, Scotland to circle Ireland (including Northern Ireland) for our first part of the 2014 season. Second part will be in Scotland, in the Outer Hebrides and the Orkneys.
